International Yoga Day, 21st June

First International Day of Yoga to be celebrated on 21st June as declared by UN General Assembly. This declaration came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal to celebrate the same.

On 11th December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came after Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, proposed to adopt 21st June as International Day of Yoga during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014. PM stated: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with you, the world and the nature. ” In Suggesting June 21, Which is the Summer Solstice, as the International Day of Yoga, Narendra Modi Had That said, “the date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world. ”

Narendra Modi further stated that “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being.”

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the International Yoga Day would bring attention to yoga’s holistic benefits.

“Yoga can contribute to resilience against non-communicable diseases. Yoga can bring communities together in an inclusive manner that generates respect,” Ban said in a statement.

“Yoga is a sport that can contribute to development and peace. Yoga can even help people in emergency situations to find relief from stress,” he added.
