It’s Definitely Not The Sound of Music! New Memoir Offers Glimpse of 21st Century Convent Life

LINCOLN, Neb. - May 28, 2015 - PRLog -- Lincoln, Nebraska – Author Annie Kontor has just written a new book entitled The Nun Diaries: Why I Was a One Year Nun, which will be available for purchase exclusively on www.amazon.com starting on June 1.

In The Nun Diaries, Kontor shares her personal story of how she decided on, reacted to, coped with, failed at, and ultimately grew from her year spent becoming a sister. “As I write in the book, once I made the decision to enter the convent, I thought the hard part was over and that everything would just fall into place. It really became the most intense year of my life, full of experiences and challenges I could never have imagined,” Kontor explains.

Growing up in a Catholic family, Kontor was forced to endure nonstop bullying in parochial school and merciless sexual harassment in her Catholic high school. When she was 15, she tried to commit suicide to escape her deep depression. Despite this rough start, she completed college, joined the workforce and then entered the convent at age 27. While her tenure in the convent only lasted one short year, she grew up and gained insights that profoundly affected her into the woman she has become today.

Thought-provoking, irreverent and unflinching, The Nun Diaries offers a glimpse of life in a modern convent from a woman on the inside. Kontor’s story highlights some of the issues that the 50,000 American nuns face today:

• Dealing with the internal struggle that stems from vows of poverty, chastity and obedience

• Coping with depression and anxiety in such a radical environment

• Living with the reality of an increasingly aged population of sisters

• Serving God in a variety of social ministries

• Attempting to communicate with God even in the darkest of times

• Finding humor in such a unique way of life
