Follow on Google News | Broken Promises™ Seeks Input From Single Parents at Public ForumConnecticut-based Non-Profit Founded to Help Children of Struggling Single Parent Families with Educational and Financial Resources
By: Broken Promises “We are interested in hearing single parents’ thoughts on the benefit plans and support resources we intend to offer through Broken Promises,” said Richard Spangenberg, Executive Director of the Foundation. “ Our plans include providing financial aid, educational tutoring, parental education, and scholarships to help children in single-parent households succeed in life. Please note that Individuals interested in attending should register at the broken-promises.org website and click on the event selection in the top menu. Coffee will be provided. In making this announcement, Spangenberg explained that Broken Promises grew out of a film project that focused on the hardships children of single-parent families experience. “I became aware of the heartbreak experienced by single-parent families and the financial crisis caused by non-payment of child support and several other reasons while developing a short documentary film. It tore at my heart and I decided the problem deserved some form of an organization that could focus public attention on the issue and accomplish something… making a difference in these individuals’ The mission of the Broken Promises Foundation is to save the children of struggling single-parent families by providing educational opportunities, financial support and raise national awareness of the challenges they face to effect positive change – ultimately for millions of affected families – men, women, and children. The statistics are staggering. According to U.S. Census Bureau, out of about 12 million single parent families in 2014, more than 80% were headed by single mothers. Today 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 — a total of about 17.4 million — are being raised without a father and nearly half (45%) live below the poverty line. For those living with father only, about 21% live in poverty. In contrast, among children living with both parents, only 13% are counted as poor. “This is an issue that needs to be addressed now as it affects each and every one of us. In today’s economic environment, these children become all of our children. We must all help to save them,” said Spangenberg. “We are looking forward to initiating change and we need the help of the public to do it effectively.” For more information, visit www.broken-promises.org or contact Cindy Clarke at cindy.clarke@ End
