myON Launches Summer 2015 Reading Challenge: Every Hero Has A Story

Impact of summer loss can be countered by reading just 5 digital books

MINNEAPOLIS - May 20, 2015 - PRLog -- myON (http://www.myon.com) is excited to announce it’s 4th annual summer reading challenge, designed to support educators in keeping kids engaged in reading over the summer. Leveraging the American Library Association annual theme “Every Hero Has a Story”, myON has created a turnkey program for educators to encourage students to read “just right” books over the summer.

Based on research from the National Summer Learning Association, access to books and simply reading 5-8 books over the summer are the most effective activities that counter the effects of summer learning loss. myON’s personalized literacy environment recommends books to each student by matching individual students with books that meet their interests as well as their target Lexile® range.

The myON summer program started in 2012 with 26,000 students reading over the summer. In 2014, over 368,000 students participated in the program, reading well over 4 million books during the summer. “Research and our own experience have shown that kids read more – and learn more – when they can choose books that meet their interests and are at their reading level, which is the fundamental principle behind myON,” adds Brekhus. “We are pleased to collaborate with our partner schools, districts and communities that work so hard to keep kids reading and learning year-round.”

To encourage reading, the myON Summer Reading Challenge awards top readers, those who have spent the most time reading between May 15 and Sept. 4. A new addition to this year’s contest is student-book reviews, providing a deeper layer of critical thinking.  Students are able to utilize myON’s embedded literacy toolkit to write reviews of books they complete, to ensure they understand what they are reading.

Because myON seamlessly monitors reading activity – including time spent reading, the number of books that are read, and Lexile growth – kids and parents don’t have to devote time to keeping track, leaving more time for reading.

Additional details about the 2015 Summer Challenge will be provided to students and families by the schools, districts and communities that are using myON as well as through social media. For more information, please visit http://thefutureinreading.myon.com/2015Summer.
