Follow on Google News | Q2 Transportation Equipment Rates and Demand - 2015By: Barrgo Trans4Cast by Truckstop and FTR releases equipment rate and market demand reports in each issues. The most recent (MDI) Market Demand Index has shown a positive increase over the past ten weeks although it is pacing well behind 2014. Since December of 2014 equipment rates have seen a steady decline for specialized trailers while dry vans, reefers, and flatbeds have had a slight increase since February. The chart below on the left is crude trailer online selling prices and the right is pneumatic, both have a time range of Jan 2014 to April 2015. While there is not a great deal of data here it is directionally inline with Trans4cast’s index. In regards to demand we can compare the MDI to Google search trends and see how the correlate. Using the search term “tank trailers for sale” GoogleTrends shows us relative interest over time. We structured it so that we could look at the interest YoY comparing Jan 2014-Apr 2015 to Jan 2013-Apr 2014. The blue line represents 2014-2015 and 15% increase over the prior year. This is largely related to the pneumatic wave that happen around August 2014. The trend does forecast an uptick for the coming months in terms of interest which is inline with the MDI provided by Trans4cast. Lastly we have FTR’s Trucking Conditions Index (TCI) which takes into account a number of factors but is also touting a rebound during the summer due to increased consumer spending and truck demand stabilizing. It is difficult to separate the broad strokes from individual nuances in regards to factors weighing into equipment demand and price. The general consensus amongst transparent sources are obscure in what is going to happen to the price of oil but have a positive outlook for the short term in transportation. End
