7th Annual Drive to Cure Diabetes

Turner Construction Company signs up to be the Presenting Sponsor at golf outing to raise money for the Faustman Lab to cure type 1 diabetes.

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - May 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Bob and Kathi Kearney, are hosting the 7th Annual Drive to Cure Diabetes golf outing at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel, NY on Monday, July 27th. Turner Construction Company will be the Presenting Sponsor at this year’s event, which will be raising money for Dr. Denise Faustman's lab at Massachusetts General Hospital.  In raising money for Dr. Faustman they are hoping to see type 1 diabetes eradicated.

Dr. Faustman’s work is a Practical Cure, meaning that it is a solution that can be widely available in the near future and which enables people with established type 1 diabetes to live a near-normal lifestyle, free from daily disease management routines.  The Juvenile Diabetes Cure Alliance (JDCA) defines a Practical Cure as having four main characteristics: minimal monitoring, free diet, sleep worry free and minimal side effects.  Dr. Faustman’s Phase II human trials are scheduled to begin within the next few months, and to be completed between 2019-2022.  This means that in less than ten years, every patient who has been living with this disease, may be able to live without having to constantly monitor their blood sugars and injecting insulin.  There is hope!

Dr. Faustman does not receive any government funding.  In fact, JDCA reported in their article, Type 1 Diabetes: State of the Cure, Fall 2014: “JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and ADA (American Diabetes Association) raise over $400 million per year, which represents 80% of all donor contributions to type 1 diabetes in the United States.  Of that $400 million, only $6 million (1.5%) went to Practical Cure research in 2013, all from JDRF.  The ADA did not fund any Practical Cure research at all.  Said differently, only 1.5 cents of every donor dollar makes it to Practical Cure research.”

Dr. Faustman needs $25.2 million to fully fund the Phase II trials.  To date they have raised $18.4 million.  Drive to Cure Diabetes is a 501(c)(3) organization. All profits are donated to the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Through our first six golf outings, we have raised $35,500 for Dr. Faustman.

Deadline for entry is June 27, 2015.  Cost is $150.00 per golfer, $600.00 per foursome, and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, driving range, box lunch and dinner.  This year, with Turner Construction as our Presenting Sponsor, all golfers will receive a golf jersey with Drive to Cure Diabetes’ and Turner’s logo.
