Savannah Private School Students Recreate Famous Piece of Art

SAVANNAH, Ga. - May 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Students at St. Andrew's School, located in Savannah, Georgia, recreated one of Georges Seurat's works of art for the entire school this morning. Middle School art students spent about a week painting the background of "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte," which includes three dogs, eight boats and 48 people in a sunny Parisian park.

After the painting part of the project was complete, students began searching for props and costumes to bring the work of art to life.  The costumes were selected to mimic the original oil strokes in the painting.

Once each student took their spot in the live art display, the piece was complete.  Nine middle school students, one faculty child and a family pet appeared frozen in the frame.

In his best-known and largest painting, Georges Seurat worked on the painting in several campaigns, beginning in 1884 with a layer of small horizontal brushstrokes. In later years, he added small dots that appear as solid and luminous forms when seen from a distance.

"We have done this type of recreation for several years now and it is always a highlight for the students," said Miki Duval, St. Andrew's Art Teacher.  "We study some of the most renown paintings and literally bring the piece to life. The acitivity is engaging, collaborative and a great way to make art relevant for young people."

St. Andrew's is an independent International Baccalaureate World School offering the diploma program. For more information, visit http://www.saintschool.com
