American Friends of DVI hosts Screening of Documentary Film COMPLICIT to Benefit the DVI Clinic

NEW YORK - April 29, 2015 - PRLog -- American Friends of Dental Volunteers for Israel (AFDVI) is proud to announce an evening of remembrance, education and enlightenment to commemorate the 76th Anniversary of the saga of the SS St. Louis.  The event will take place on Sunday, May 17th, from 6-9pm at JCC Manhattan.  Executive Director of the SS St. Louis Legacy Project Foundation, Robert Krakow, will be presenting the documentary film COMPLICIT The untold story of why the Roosevelt Administration denied safe haven to Jewish Refugees to benefit the DVI Trudi Birger Dental Clinic in Jerusalem.  Five surviving passengers of the SS St. Louis, including Eva Wiener and Judith Steel, about which Prof. Phyllis Chesler recently wrote in an op-ed in Israel National News, “They say that these survivors, this precious remnant, are dying off, yet these two women were remarkably robust, alert, fashionably dressed, vital,”  will participate in a discussion immediately following the screening.

The DVI clinic was founded by Holocaust survivor Trudi Birger in 1980 and is the only free dental clinic of its kind in Israel.  For 35 years, the clinic has provided dental care to thousands of underprivileged children in Jerusalem with the help of volunteer dentists from around the world.

"The Trudi Birger Dental Clinic is a place where dentists from over 36 countries and of all religions come to care for the indigent children of Jerusalem regardless of religion, race or ethnicity," says AFDVI President Dr. Michael J. Goldberg.  “This award-winning film contains rare archival footage and recounts the voyage of the SS St. Louis which set sail from Germany in 1939 seeking refuge from Nazi persecution but was denied safe haven in Cuba, the United States and Canada.  It also honors those who perished in the Holocaust and celebrates the lives of survivors who have made such positive contributions to their adopted countries, as our own Trudi Birger made to her’s.”
