Television As the History of Modern Culture

Development of TV

The original development of television dates back to the 1920s, when a combination of inventions allowed "mechanical" TVs with a screen the size of a matchbox. These actually had motors in them, and were called "Scanning Disk" TVs because of their spinning disk mechanism. They were designed in wooden furniture casings, much like old style radios.

American and European sets in the prewar era looked somewhat like the 1950s designs, but the picture quality was something else. These were made by General Electric and RCA in the US, and were button and dial configurations.

In World War 2, the Germans experimented with a broadcast from the Eiffel Tower, and the Americans with the first TV guided missiles. Actual TV development as we know it started in the postwar era, beginning with more radio-like designs, but progressing to the first real modern analog sets in the mid 50s.

Introduction of TV

The mid-50s models, combined with much better broadcasting technology, produced the TV generation. If you've seen the pictures of people watching televisions and getting scared of pictures of an oncoming train or car on screen, that's what actually happened.

TV caused the biggest boom in consumer product manufacturing and sales in history. Not only the TVs themselves, but the products they advertised, were in huge demand. It even affected language usage, with slogans becoming standard expressions.

TV as a consumer icon

TV soon acquired status symbol value. The TV owner became as fastidious as the car owner, going for bigger an better models. This was "market penetration" in more ways than one, because all consumer products were inevitably compared to those on TV. The TV generation actually set the standards for modern consumerism in many ways.


Color

Color TV allowed excellent production and graphics, and the old formats were soon replaced with sets and effects designed to dazzle. TV programs incorporated everything they could find or invent to improve their impact.

Digital TV and High definition Digital TV

Digital TV was the next big breakthrough. Digital TV has a huge range of options for signal usage and quality. The effect of the new capacity was to revolutionize the whole broadcast medium, multiplying the range of channels by factors of thousands.

Flat screens and the home entertainment systems of today

Then came the flat screens and big digital entertainment systems. These systems have several areas of overlap with computer technology, and that's created the vast video gaming industry.
