Fyodor Dostoevsky was the son of a poor Russian doctor. In 1849 he was arrested and condemned to death for taking part in conversations against printing censorship. After eight months in jail, he was taken out to be shot, but His Majesty spared his life. His sentence was commuted to four years hard labor in Siberia, plus serving in a disciplinary battalion. The author wrote at tremendous speed and is said to never have corrected his work, which is evident in many of his books, especially Crime and Punishment.

In June 1880 he made a famous speech at the unveiling of the Pushkin monument in Moscow. A few months later he died and a vast multitude of mourners came to the cemetery for his burial. Dostoevsky is still among the most widely read Russian authors and his books are assigned reading for students throughout the world.
