OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (April 20, 2015) – On Monday, April 20, Dr. Harold Hess, neurosurgeon, performed the first US surgical implantation of the Minuteman G3, currently the world’s only percutaneous interlaminar fusion device.

The Minuteman G3 (http://www.spinalsimplicity.com/minuteman-mis-3/) is indicated for the treatment of degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis (slippage of the spine) where symptoms are usually low back and leg pain.  The percutaneous lateral approach used to implant the device eliminates the lateral dissection of sensitive back muscles often associated with lumbar fusions and also avoids the neural structures unlike traditional posterior fixation systems. This provides the patient with a shorter procedure time, less blood loss and a faster recovery--improving the overall outcome of lumbar fusion procedures.

The Minuteman G3 was invented in Overland Park, Kansas, by Harold Hess, M.D., Todd Moseley and a team of engineers at Spinal Simplicity, LLC. The device received FDA 510(k) clearance in January 2015 and is commercially launching nationwide.
