Award-Winning Tech Startup Whizmeal Teams Up With Local Schools to Create Healthy Meals

RAFFLES PLACE, Singapore - April 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Whizmeal, a revolutionary, award-winning online ordering platform cum healthy eating programme, has been implemented in West Spring Primary’s school canteen as of January 2015.

Designed by a local tech startup of the same name, Whizmeal allows parents to pre-order their children’s canteen school meals online. When ordering, parents are provided with the nutritional content of each dish, and have a choice of non-halal, halal and vegetarian meals for their children.

Prior to crafting a new, healthy menu, the Whizmeal team educates canteen stallholders on HPB’s healthy eating guidelines, as well as menu planning and cost considerations.

In West Spring Primary School, Whizmeal, which was implemented this year, has already shown benefits aside from promoting healthy eating among kids.

For example, Whizmeal’s online platform helps the school establish active online communication with parents. This is in line with West Spring’s mission of adopting interdisciplinary learning and teaching approaches, including making use of technology.

Another benefit Whizmeal has brought is ensuring that MOE’s subsidies for children from low-income families is spent wisely. By substituting cash vouchers with Whizmeal’s online platform, the school ensures that the subsidies are spent on healthy meals rather than snacks. Additionally, Whizmeal helps ease the administrative burden of handling these subsidies.

Also, prior to Whizmeal, stallholders were unwilling to comply with health eating guidelines such as adding fruits to a meal, due to cost considerations.

Now, stallholders are more motivated to provide balanced meals, mainly because Whizmeal has managed to improve income predictability. Because Whizmeal requires online payment, stallholders receive payment in advance, enabling them to better calculate cost and revenue.

Because of Whizmeal’s innovative approach, it has won multiple awards, including the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation’s Silver Award for Best Social and Community Product in 2014, and the Founder Institute Award for Best Social Good in 2013.

As a next step, Whizmeal plans to take their online platform out of Singapore and introduce the programme to 100 schools regionally and internationally in the coming year.
