-- In honor of Israel Independence Day, the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, with the support of more than twenty organizations, will present ISRAEL @ 67, a free community celebration on Wednesday, April 22, featuring a broad range of programming from 4pm – midnight.
A free Family Celebration kicks off the event from 4 - 8pm, featuring carnival rides and attractions (e.g., Twister, Space Challenger, Junior Pirate Ship, Spinning Tops, plus inflatable Super Slide and Bounce Houses); Israel-thematic interactive activity stations for the kids developed by participating organizations;
“street performers” presenting a variety of shows including fire eating, acrobatics, juggling and clowning, and a basketball shooting contest and clinic with special guest, Derrick Sharp, former Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball star, captain, an d assistant coach. During this time period (at 6pm, a special ceremony will take place that transitions from the period of Israel Memorial Day to Israel Independence Day that includes the sounding of a siren that brings the program to a standstill for a moment of silence to honor the memory of Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror, the reciting of the special YIZKOR prayer for this somber occasion, and the raising of the flag of Israel, which had been flying at half-staff since the previous evening in observance of Israel’s Memorial Day. Following, there will be a torch lighting ceremony, whose “lighters”
were selected in recognition of the work and projects that they have done to strengthen the connection and relationship between South Florida and the State of Israel, along with Israeli Dancing. Throughout this time, a diverse menu of food items will be available for purchase at an Israeli-style glatt kosher food court.
At 8pm, the MAR-JCC Scheck Family Gymnasium will resound with a special Israel @ 67 concert featuring popular Israeli entertainers, Ron Oz and Orit Tahah, then at 9pm, under a “Big Tent,” a Young Adult Yekev Party targeting ages 21 – 35, will begin. The Party will include an Israeli DJ, food and beverages including Israeli wine (Yarden and beer). Tickets may be purchased in advance at for $18 or for $25 at the door. Then, on Thursday, April 23, from 9am – 2pm, elementary age students from 3 area day schools will converge on the Michael-
Ann Russell JCC, for FESTIVAL SHIRIM – where classes perform songs in honor of Israel’s Independence Day, as well as participate in a myriad of Israel-thematic activities (including Israeli dance, pita-making, arts and crafts, theatre games, and more), while also enjoying special performances by singers Ron Oz and Orit Tahan.
