Background on Fire Safety Council For Monterey County:

Wildfires are a dangerous and life-threatening fact of life. Monterey County is especially vulnerable because of its abundance of densely vegetated lands and dry summers.

The Fire Safe Council For Monterey County not only helps people in the county protect lives, property and resources from catastrophic wildfires, but also helps to empower people to live safely with fire.

The council, a nonprofit organization does that by educating residents and businesses about fire-safe practices, and helping landowners obtain grants to fund managing and reducing vegetation.

These goals are outlined in The Monterey County Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which was written following the collaborative process laid out in Federal law, including participation by federal, state and local fire agencies, federal land managers, homeowner associations, conservationists, and individuals from communities that are threatened by and signed by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors in December 2010.

The protection plan people in areas the plan lists as being priority areas for fuel reduction work to apply for fuel-reduction project grants to help make their community safer.

The Fire Safe Council For Monterey County helps residents and businesses apply for these grants. This year, the California Fire Safe Council awarded 38 grants totaling more than $4 million, which is projected to treat 17,793 acres in 30 counties.

The grants the Fire Safe Council For Monterey County helps people obtain typically fund fuel-reduction projects to create defensible space around homes and other structures, to make evacuation routes safer during wildfires, and to help create or maintain fuel breaks intended to protect communities.  Such grants typically also fund a public education component to inform people about the need to prepare for wildfires before they start.

Over the past few years the council has helped bring more than $1 million worth of grant funds into Monterey County to perform this life-protecting work to prepare for wildfires.

The Fire Safe Council For Monterey County is asking for the public's support through its current campaign, to help protect lives, property and resources in Monterey County in the event of wildfire.  Tax-deductible donations can be easily made using the PayPal donate button on the organization's website, www.firesafemonterey.org.

Anyone can join in this effort by supporting it with donations or by volunteering time. Time and place of monthly meetings are at www.firesafemonterey.org/calendar.html
