Follow on Google News | House of Lords Peer Visits Bradford School ChildrenLord Woolmer of Leeds, Kenneth Woolmer, made a special visit to Year 10 and Sixth Form students at Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College earlier on this month.
By: Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College Farzana Hussain, Community Engagement Manager, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with someone who knows the parliamentary system. It was also to serve as encouragement to our students to participate in our parliamentary democracy as most of them are approaching voting age.” Baron Woolmer said: “These young people are just the most fantastic ambassadors for their school and their families. They speak with passion about making a positive difference. All the staff I have met are so committed to supporting these youngsters – I take my hat off to both the students and their teachers.” Students were keen to seek Lord Woolmer’s advice as to how they could get involved in public life and staff were thrilled when Lord Woolmer said it was genuinely the best organised school visit he had ever attended. Jen McIntosh, Principal at the school, said: “Lord Woolmer recognised that we are building a strong partnership between students, staff, parents, the current Interim Executive Board (IEB) members and our wider community to foster good citizenship. He was able to draw upon his years of public service to give us invaluable advice about how we can ensure our young people can flourish and have a voice in our democracy.” The Peers in Schools programme allows members of the Lords to share its pool of experience and knowledge with participating schools.
