Virginia Gin Wins Double Gold Award In San Francisco World Spirits Competition
Afton-based Silverback Distillery wins two awards for its handcrafted gin and vodka

The San Francisco World Spirits Competition hosted its 15th annual competition March 19-22nd in downtown San Francisco. Winners were announced the first week of April. The competition is considered to be the rite of passage for top quality spirits as it has 41 of the world’s top professional palates serving as judges. This year, the gin category nearly tripled in entries and only 10 in the world received the Double Gold Medal Award in a blind taste test, including Virginia’s Strange Monkey Gin from Silverback Distillery.
Silverback Distillery began distilling Strange Monkey Gin in July 2014. The 8-month-old handcrafted, premium gin was recently introduced in Richmond, Virginia and has been added to the spirits list at Morton’s The Steakhouse. Silverback’s handcrafted, premium Beringei Vodka, also 6-months-old, won a bronze award for packaging, making it the first Virginia-made vodka to win this award since 2006. Morton’s The Steakhouse will be unveiling a new cocktail this spring featuring Silverback Distillery’s spirits.
Richmond will officially welcome Silverback Distillery Spirits to the area April 20th at an event with Richmond Restaurant Group. The event will feature tastings, mixed drinks, food pairings and an opportunity to learn more from the Silverback Troop Ambassadors. Richmond restaurant owners and bar managers can expect to receive their invitations within the next two weeks. Silverback Distillery Spirits can be found in 40 restaurants within the Commonwealth. Silverback’s spirits were introduced in Georgia this March. The distillery expects to expand into Washington D.C. and Virginia Beach this summer.
