“...naively 'romantic,' emotionally stirring… Through its rough naturalism there runs a vein of authentic poetry…” -director-critic Harold Clurman. The River Niger is a three-act play that was originally produced Off-Broadway in 1972 by the Negro Ensemble Company and won an Obie Award before being transferred to Broadway and winning a Tony Award in 1974. “For if you remain silent at this time... but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Est 4:14. 1970 until 2015, the Black male and Black family are still under attack. As Esther was counseled about the value of her position to the deliverance of her people, First World Theatre Ensemble and Kaged Tiger Productions present THE RIVER NIGER “for such a time as this.” As Black male lives are devalued and being snuffed out recklessly by law enforcement and gang activity, as the law attempts to become lawless, Joseph A. Walker’s THE RIVER NIGER brings us present to the realization that even if you don't understand the Black culture way of loving each other, does not mean that all Black men do not take care of their family. A son's homecoming has him making the difficult transition into adulthood in which he must confront his father who is experiencing his own crisis and transition as he tries to make a success of his own failures, accept his wife's transition and son's independence. Can the love of a family overcome a lifetime of pain?
