CHATSWORTH, Calif. - April 8, 2015 - PRLog -- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the United States according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.  The agency reports that it claims more than 120,000 American lives each year and that more than 12 million people have been diagnosed with the condition.  Another 12 million likely have COPD, but have not officially been diagnosed.

COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and in some cases asthma.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports, “In the United States, tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, although exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.”

For those who do suffer from COPD, avoiding air pollutants in their home and work environment is a critical component to managing the condition.  “Most people recognize that avoiding tobacco smoke is important for preventing COPD or worsening the condition for those who already have it,” said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark.  “In addition to tobacco smoke, there are numerous other allergens and irritants people with COPD should avoid.  These include everything from mold, bacteria, pollen, pet dander and dust mites to volatile organic compounds and particulate matter.  At CSC, we offer air testing services that can identify a wide range of indoor environmental pollutants that can aggravate COPD and other respiratory ailments.  If air testing identifies an issue, our building science experts can help come up with solutions to minimize exposure so that those with respiratory problems can breathe easier.”

CSC has sponsored an educational video about COPD, indoor allergens and other common air pollutants that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/tv-rKdXoW5A
