OXFORD, U.K. - April 8, 2015 - PRLog -- After months of dormancy, spring is encouraging the growth and emergence of new Japanese Knotwood shoots across the UK.

While the weeds are inactive during the winter months, spring kickstarts their growth as new shoots sprout from the underground rhizomes in response to more favourable growing weather. Once the shoots have emerged, growth accelerates rapidly at rates of up to 3cm every day. By early summer, the weeds can reach heights of 3m.

What Is Japanese Knotweed?

Japanese Knotweed has enjoyed public attention in recent years after having been classified as Britain’s most invasive non-native weed. It is a tall, bamboo-like plant originally from the Far East, imported into the country by the Victorians for its horticultural value.

A lack of predators and favourable growing conditions enabled the spread of the weed, encouraged by its natural tendencies for accelerated propagation. Very quickly it became an established pest across the length of the UK.

Why Is It Such A Problem?

In addition to its high rate of growth and ease of propagation, Japanese Knotweed is incredibly resilient. The shoots are hardy, capable of forcing their way through wood, stone, concrete, tarmac and certain metals, causing costly damage (http://www.tpknotweed.com/damage) to roads, walls, building infrastructure and water/gas pipes. Residential and commercial properties alike are susceptible to infestation, potentially causing thousands of pounds in damages.

Many landowners have checked their premises for Japanese Knotweed in light of recent media attention over the last few years. However, with new shoots emerging, TP Knotweed are responding to more and more new cases throughout the UK on previously knotweed-free premises.

What Can You Do?

The weed’s resilience makes it almost impossible to remove without professional help. Landowners might try digging up roots, burning the plant or clipping emerging shoots but these methods are generally ineffective and can actually lead to the spread of the plant to neighbouring areas, as clippings propagate and roots restart. Dealing with suspected knotweed in this way is irresponsible, given its propensity for infestation.
