Microsoft Tops March #CloudInfluence Rankings, as its Marketing Muscle Starts to Pay Dividends

Microsoft share of voice out-paces rivals in battle for cloud share

WATERLOO, U.K. - April 8, 2015 - PRLog -- LONDON, April 8, 2015 — Compare the Cloud, today announced that Microsoft had topped its monthly global #CloudInfluence organisation rankings for March 2015, with Aziz Benmalek, GM of Hosting Service Providers at Microsoft leading the individual rankings.

Based on big data analytics of all major global news, blogs, forums, and social media interaction, the rankings appear as monthly league tables listing the most influential firms and individuals in cloud computing. For the third consecutive month Microsoft topped the table, just ahead of arch rival Amazon which moving up to second ahead of Apple, Oracle and IBM.

“AWS may currently be bigger than Microsoft in cloud revenue terms, but Microsoft is now growing its cloud revenue significantly faster and at the current rate would catch AWS in the next few years. Microsoft may also have had low cloud usage rates, but these are now rising rapidly as well. And in terms of share of voice and #CloudInfluence, Microsoft is heads and shoulders above its main rivals,” commented Bill Mew, Compare the Cloud’s CMO. “You wouldn’t want to write off any of the main players: AWS’s lead is significant; Google’s technology is incredible; and IBM’s ability to come back against competitors has been proven time and time again over the last 100 years. However, in a market in its early growth phase, as cloud is, it is often mind share that has the greatest influence and as the Compare the Cloud #CloudInfluence rankings show it is Microsoft that currently appears most like the heir apparent to the cloud throne.”

The Amazon model has been to reduce prices in order to drive growth, even though according to Citi's estimates (http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-will-lo...) it has done so at a loss, even with minimal marketing spend. By contrast rivals like Microsoft and IBM have invested heavily in cloud marketing, with both leading last month’s Compare the Cloud #CloudInfluence rankings as a result, but while IBM has failed to sustain the momentum from its PWLC and Impact events and has fallen back to fifth in the rankings this month, Microsoft has retained its lead. Indeed the big data analysis behind Compare the Cloud’s #CloudInfluence ranking found that Microsoft’s influence has continued to increase – significantly outpacing that of all its rivals.

“Soon Amazon is due to disclose its AWS financials and we will know for sure how profitable the business is and whether it has the cash flow and reserves to take on deep-pocketed rivals like Microsoft and Google, or to fund and sustain a long marketing battle with big brands like Microsoft or IBM,” added Mew.
