AMARILLO, Texas - April 3, 2015 - PRLog -- The Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program of The University of Texas at Austin will sponsor its annual research symposium at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 7 at the Amarillo College Concert Hall Theatre. A reception will follow at the Amarillo Museum of Art.

The event features top scholars discussing their areas of research such as the challenges of America’s Middle Eastern alliances and the nexus of energy and water.

This marks the 15th year the Harrington Fellows Program has hosted similar symposiums in Austin, Amarillo, and at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. The first symposium was presented at the University of Texas in 2001 by the first class of Harrington Fellows (2000-2001) composed of four faculty members and nine graduate students.

Along with the Harrington Fellows Program, hosts for this year’s event include the members of the Amarillo Area Foundation Local Partners in Higher Education, the Amarillo Area Foundation/Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation, Amarillo College, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and West Texas A&M University.

“I always look forward to this event. Not only do I get to visit with our distinguished Longhorn friends in Amarillo, but I get to see the fruits of this great and important fellowship. We are forever grateful to Sybil Harrington for founding this tradition with her gift,” says University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers, who will attend the event with Executive Vice President and Provost Greg Fenves, Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Janet Dukerich, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Director of Faculty Development and Fellowship Programs Marvin Hackertand Harrington Program Coordinator Del Watson.

The Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program is one of the best endowed visiting scholar and graduate fellow programs in the nation, and the most prestigious fellowship program at The University of Texas at Austin. Sybil Harrington established the program as a tribute to her husband, Don, in 1990 with gifts from the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation and the Sybil B. Harrington Trust. The initial gift of $12.8m has grown to $42m over the past 25 years. At the request of Mrs. Harrington, the gift was a secret and not publically announced until the program was created in 2000,two years after her death.  The fellowships support young faculty members and graduate students who have academic records of success and ingenuity. Over the past 15 years, the program has awarded fellowships to 61 faculty fellows and 139 graduate fellows. Dr. Jamie S. Cantara, Executive Director of Endowment Services at the University of Texas, reported that the Harrington Fellows Program endowment is still the 6th highest endowment for both book and market value of all UT endowments. The Harrington Fellows Program has tremendous impact on the University.
