April 3, 2015 - PRLog -- Major national calamities, economic crises, loss of lives, and bad business decisions often have one thing in common: the inability or predisposed disinclination to notice important key factors that put lives, businesses, or institutions in danger. In The Power of Noticing, Max Bazerman states that learning how to notice things others may overlook and harnessing the power of noticing in business, social, and personal situations increase a person’s value and effectiveness in all situations. In addition to noticing what is immediately obvious, what is not so obvious, and what may become obvious down the road, it is important to notice what is not happening in order to make well-informed decisions and take more effective actions.

To make better decisions at all times, individuals should keep the following points in mind:

*Leaders should collect as much information as possible, even if it is not immediately available.

*All workers should be aware of motivated blindness. People engage in this behavior when there are good reasons not to see something that causes discomfort.

*It is important to be vigilant, even when things on the surface appear to be going well.

*Industrywide blindness, which is often caused by professional jealousy and didactic criteria-gathering methods, should be avoided.

* Like magicians, unscrupulous businesspeople and negotiators use a lack of noticing to their advantage.

*Those on a slippery slope miss the obvious, which is often what allows financial wrongdoing to reach monumental proportions before anyone notices.

*What is not going on, or what did not happen, is often as revealing as what can be seen and identified.

*If what is clearly visible appears too good to be true, it probably is.

*Noticing also includes looking ahead, especially when making business decisions that will be affected by future events.

*The indirect effects of actions should always be considered.

*Predictable surprises can be prevented by examining all available information on a subject, including information from the media and experts in the field.

*The capacity to notice things should be developed not only in business leaders but also in the employees who report to them.
