BOSTON - March 31, 2015 - PRLog -- WHAT:On Sunday, April 19th, 2015 Beat Brasserie (aka Beat Hotel), located in Cambridge’s Harvard Square, will host a special edition of its Big Band Sundays. From 7:00PM to 11:00PM the legendary Greg Hopkins and orchestra will take The Beat’s stage to host a tribute to the great Duke Ellington.

Arguably the greatest composer to ever live, Duke Ellington was much more than that. Best known for his big band songs such as “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” and “Rose Room,” the legendary composer filled the world with tunes in a genre of their own, and of which he called “American Music.” An equally notable, pianist and big band leader, Ellington continued to rock the stage despite the decline of big band popularity during his time. After devoting his life to groundbreaking music, Ellington won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1966. To honor the timeless music of this epic composer, Greg Hopkins will take The Beat’s stage with his big orchestra to fill the room with Ellington favorites.

Hopkins began playing the trumpet at a young age. Growing up in Detroit, he spent most of his time practicing his trumpet and throwing himself into the intricacies of jazz music. Beginning his career in the Detroit area as a freelance musician, Hopkins eventually moved to Boston where he has been a Professor at Berklee College of Music since 1974. Hopkins has performed with big name jazz musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Dizzy Gillespie, and Gladys Knight. He has also been an arranger and jazz trumpeter with Billy Maxted and Buddy Rich orchestras.

While enjoying music, guests are welcome to a full dinner with selections such as the Sweet Chili Baby Back Ribs ($15), Earth Bowl, with your choice of protein, 5 grain pilaf, chickpea and tomato soup, roasted vegetables, rainbow carrots, turnips, pumpkin, broccoli, tahini and more ($23-26), and Roasted Diver Scallops, with squid ink pasta, crab, leeks, and tomato ($32).  Wine enthusiasts will appreciate The Beat’s acclaimed wine list featuring 36 American artisanal wines on tap and an acclaimed reserve list. Signature concoctions to imbibe include the Plimoth Daiquiri made with Privateer White rum, Barrow’s ginger liqueur and pumpkin spiced simple syrup ($12) and the Smokey The Bear made with Old Overholt, Amere Nouvelle, Vya Sweet Vermouth and Balcones Brimstone Whisky ($13).
