Follow on Google News | April Free First Thursday Night at MAMExtended gallery hours offer free admission, unique programming, live music, and a full-service bar. This month’s highlights include a preview of the 2015 Montclair Film Festival, a Cuban artist’s talk, and reception for The Montclair 10.
Docent tours of Come as You Are: Art of the 1990s, the first major American museum survey to examine the art of this pivotal decade in its historical context, will be held at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., a unique tour titled Philosophy and Art in partnership with the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children at Montclair State University will be offered. Additional exhibitions on view include highlights from the Museum’s collection and a new Native American art installation of Pueblo Indian Pottery. At 7 p.m., hear directly from Cuban artist Ibrahim Miranda on his work. Miranda’s primary concern is the nature of life in Cuba. He paints on pieced-together Cuban maps, which he then transforms into narratives. Then, at 8 p.m. go behind the scenes of the Montclair Film Festival with executive director Tom Hall. Get a sneak peek of the upcoming line-up and pick up a MFF brochure. Live music in the galleries will feature the Jefferson Jazz Ensemble, led by TH Kieren. They will play songs from the '40s through the '60s via their American Song Book "standards" including songs from award-winning stage and screen music—from composers such as Berlin, Porter, Rogers & Hammerstein, and several more. Memorable tunes will include "Over the Rainbow," "Pennies from Heaven," "Tenderly," and "Begin the Beguine."
