At the touch of a button - bringing clinicians and SMEs together

GREATER MANCHESTER, U.K. - March 24, 2015 - PRLog -- Imagine self-administering physiotherapy using your smartphone.

Or finding out about cutting edge Emergency Medicine research at the same time as the world experts.

Or stemming the dangers of juvenile diabetes by playing a smartphone game that teaches you how to take better care of yourself.

All these – and other ideas - will be explored at a rare and innovative series of “Mobilise the NHS” days to be held in central Manchester. Bringing NHS staff out of hospital settings to collaborate with small to medium digital companies in the North West, the event will look to develop state of the art applications to provide the next generation of healthcare. At the touch of a button, world class health care will be the ultimate result.  The event will be supported by experts from Caradigm and Barclays.

The first -  “Mobilise the NHS day” – will be held on Wednesday 25th March.

“Small digital businesses are often at the cutting edge of mobile application innovation,” says Dr Sarah Thew, Innovation and User Experience Manager at GM AHSN “and the NHS needs their ideas and originality.”

In the North West, digital innovation has a proven track record. The “Mobilise the NHS Day” will extend that into healthcare. The aim is for small businesses to engage with clinical staff so that they can learn about clinical needs and vice versa, medical staff can learn about software development. To date, the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and Greater Manchester AHSN have come up with five great suggestions to improve care in Bolton – and beyond, in the wider NHS. These include applications in physiotherapy, juvenile diabetes, autism, medical education and microbiology.

“It is exciting to enable clinicians to work side by side with some of the best mobile development SMEs in the UK in order to develop solutions to improve patient care,” said Rachel Dunscombe, Chief Information Officer Bolton NHS Foundation Trust. “There are many benefits including the potential of innovative apps, increasing the clinicians’ knowledge of the "art of the possible" for app development and helping the SMEs understand how they can be commissioned by the NHS.”

All represent technical and conceptual challenges. At these meetings, clinical staff will meet businesses who have not done work with the NHS but would like to.

One such SME attending the event is Appitized Health, a multi award winning mobile development agency. “We take pride in shaping innovation and are delighted to be involved in such a great programme around 'mobilising the NHS’,” commented Phil Coffin, Appitized Health Lead.

At the first of the two days, each digital company will be paired with hospital staff involved in each of the challenges. Together, they will work to develop ideas for mobile phone applications. All will storyboard their ideas in an informal, enjoyable atmosphere. There will also be speakers on hand to talk about NHS procurement and the NHS IT landscape.

The most promising teams of developers and hospital staff will return for a second day in April.  Ideas will then be expanded further and support will be provided to develop business plans as well as guidance on sources of funding.
