City’s Arbor Day tree planting postponed until Tuesday

DELHI, India - March 21, 2015 - PRLog -- The N.C. Arbor Day tree planting originally scheduled for Friday at Bradley Creek Elementary School has been postponed until Tuesday due to weather.

According to a notice from the City of Wilmington, the Wilmington Tree Commission (WTC) will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting at Bradley Creek Elementary School, 6211 Greenville Loop Road, at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“WTC members will plant a large, donated tree at the school,” City Spokesman Dylan Lee said. “Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo will be on hand, and Bradley Creek Elementary students will showcase artwork, poetry and a song to celebrate the trees of Wilmington. The event will help kick off National Arbor month in April.”

Wilmington has been a Tree City USA for the past 11 years and received the Tree City USA Growth Award for nine years, which recognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care, according to Lee. Wilmington was one of only eight cities to receive this award. To be designated as a Tree City USA, a community must meet four standards: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

The Wilmington Tree Commission is also seeking nominations for heritage trees. Heritage trees are those, which because of their size, age, rarity, overall beauty, landmark or historical significance represent an important aspect of the city’s history or natural landscape.
