Orthobiologics are substances that orthopaedic surgeons use to help injuries heal more quickly. They are used to improve the healing of broken bones and injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These products are made from substances that are naturally found in your body. When they are used in higher concentrations, orthobiologic substances help speed up the healing process. Some key benefits associated with orthobiologic conservative therapies include minimizing impact of degenerative disease, all procedures are completed in the office as an outpatient and recovery is more rapid than surgery. Portions of Orthobiologic Treatments are covered by insurance, but some are self pay.

Some examples of orthobiologics performed at Chareston Sports Medicine are:

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, Type 1A is derived from taking a small amount of blood, placing it in a centrifuge and spinning it, which separates the platelet rich plasma. It is used to treat arthritic joints, degenerative disc disease and an array of sports injuries, including tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, hip or patella tendonitis and even shin splints by injecting the site of the injury one to three times.

Bone marrow aspirate concentrate involves harvesting 60 cc of marrow from the pelvis for use in healing a joint or tendon, typically for osteoarthritis.

Amniotic allograft involves using stem cells derived from the amniotic fluid from the placentas of screened mothers who have elected to have Caesarian sections.

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells involves removing about 60 cc of fat from the patient via a liposuction procedure and harvesting stem cells. It is used primarily for osteoarthritis.
