SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - March 17, 2015 - PRLog -- With the growing news of recent school attacks, abuse and cyber hackings, public school administrators and teachers are facing an ever growing list of situations that schools are expected to protect students and even themselves from. A recent report, commissioned by the American Association of University Women, suggests that about 10 percent of students suffer some form of sexual abuse during their school careers. Plus, according to NoBullying.com, 52 percent of young people in 2014 report being cyber bullied. These are just some of the challenges. As technology and offending students continue to get more sophisticated in their attacks, educators today need to know how to handle diverse issues from bullying, to cybercrimes, suicide and school shootings.  Those in education today need to be able to handle or prevent these situations and, if possible, be several steps ahead of them.

Southern California Schools Risk Management (SCSRM) is a notable example of a JPA insurance pool that illuminates the importance of prevention by working with its membership school districts to address these problems through education. With that in mind, SCSRM in conjunction with The Learning Institute will hold their first Town Hall Meeting ‘Building Resiliency in Schools’ on March 26, 2015. This meeting will focus on helping educators combat these issues as well as help educators learn how to mitigate and intervene should an issue of this kind arise.

"There are so many social related crimes affecting our students and plaguing our schools. This Town Hall Meeting will certainly be an excellent forum for school decision makers and governing board members who are grappling with these issues," said Karla M. Rhay, Ed.D., Chief Administrative Officer of SCSRM and who will be introducing the program.

This first meeting is primarily intended for Superintendents, Cabinet Members, School Board Members and Risk Managers. Held from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, the meeting will include nationally recognized presenters on the following issues: bullying, sexual misconduct, school shootings, cybercrimes and student suicides. Some of the renowned participants that will be in attendance include: Dr. Troy Hutchings, Researcher and Professor, Fredrick Lane, Attorney and Author, as well as Rick Phillips, Founder/ CEO of Community Matters and Dr. Lisa Boesky, Psychologist and Author. The hope is to make this meeting an annual event to continually update educators on the latest in risk management while dealing with these very important issues.

Also presenting will be Dr. Glenn Lipson, Founder and CEO of Making Right Choices, “These thought leaders help us in achieving goals that improve education, while assisting us in paying attention to the threats that erode the resiliency that is necessary in today’s rapidly changing world.” Dr. Lipson is a Professor and Forensic Psychologist who has spent over two decades either treating or assessing the survivors and perpetrators of sexual misconduct, violence and other forms of abuse.

SCSRM hosts many seminars on risk management, insurance, legal challenges, employee and workplace issues to name a few. These sessions are intended to educate the school districts, promote an understanding of compliance and make sure they have the tools and most up-to-date information regarding policies and procedures. Recent seminars have included school security training, sexual harassment and misconduct in schools, resolving conflicts in the workplace and understanding teen dating violence prevention.
