TOYA NASH, Recording Artist and Founder of Coach Your Craft, Directs SHREK, THE MUSICAL JR
At The Courtyard Theater in Plano, TX April 9 – April 11, 2015 – Acting Coach uses arts education to engage students in critical thinking
By: Coach Your Craft
Teaching acting to children and teens comes natural to Toya, who has a passion for helping students come to life through performance. She, herself, is a highly successful actor and entertainer who has taught at the respected Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York City and earned her Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Actors Studio Drama School.
Ms. Nash’s philosophy for coaching is deeply rooted in her desire to provide students an opportunity for expression. She explains that, “Coaching allows me to helpstudents who study the arts to excel in other areas of their education and in life.” She continues, “The artistic process is about the exploration and communication of ideas with infinite possibilities. Each requires students to engage in creative and critical thinking.”
What better place for Ms. Nash to practice her philosophy than in a theater as she directs an outing of the highly popular Broadway hit “Shrek, The Musical JR.?” Performances will be held at The Courtyard Theater in downtown Plano from April 9-11, 2015.
As part of the company’s Junior Performance season, children and families will delight in seeing a benign green ogre and his sidekick Donkey save the land from an evil lord and rescue a lovely princess from a terrible fate.
Ms. Nash is excited about bringing “Shrek” to life on the Dallas stage. It provides audiences with fun and insightful characters from the successful movie and Broadway show and challenging roles for young actors who will learn something about themselves from the experience.
She chose to direct this play because of the positive messages it brings to young people. Ms. Nash explains, “In an encouraging way, it addresses how we sometimes hide our true selves from others for fear of rejection.” During the play, Shrek faces a moral dilemma of whether to change his life for his happiness or to maintain the status quo. She continues, “It’s a teachable moment for youth on how to embrace their differences while learning to be proud of who they are.”
And to audiences out there, Shrek is a play like no other. It stands alone in its appeal to all audiences. But it is also a great first show for children and teens who will love the great songs, dancing and colorful costumes.
