Geoff Smith will be presenting at Lyophilisation & Freeze Drying USA on PAT in the freeze drying of parenteral products. The talk will review the use of PAT for process development and manufacturing controls, the application of process analytical technologies across various scales and new impedance based technologies for molecular to macroscopic scale measurements.

"I will bring a new perspective on how impedance spectroscopy can be used to measure the characteristics of a single vial to whole populations of vials in attempt to bring a new perspective to the issues of formulation development through to scale up"

When asked about the main challenges in the industry, he said:

"Ensuring all vials receive the same thermal treatment, esp. in relation to the ice formation process, which by definition is a somewhat random event. Scale up from lab to manufacturing: again the thermal treatment of the material is inevitably different at the small scale compared with the large and it’s difficult to assess these differences during the process."
