Follow on Google News | Generation Theatre premières "Fanny" written by French playwright, Marcel PagnolThis second play in the "Marius," "Fanny," "César" trilogy will be performed in the Southside Theater at Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, from April 16 through 26, 2015. This production melds touching dramatic scenes with moments of subtle humor.
Fanny offers a window into the intimate world of the old port of Marseilles when Provence and the villages along the Côte d'Azur formed a distant, exotic culture that captured the imaginations of Parisians, securely ensconced a world away. Patrons of the waterfront Bar de la Marine share an intimacy that can only be found in the rustic environs of a trading port, enveloped in traditions and community relationships that have evolved over the centuries, well-seasoned by interaction with sailors and explorers from exotic foreign lands. This second, in a trilogy of works, Marius, Fanny and César, is a French classic that captivated Parisian audiences of the 1930’s. Parisians were hungry for insight into the exotic culture of Provence that was provided by Marcel Pagnol, one of France’s most renowned authors of the 20th century, who spent his childhood in Marseilles. The trilogy’s powerful imagery has provided inspiration to many, including Alice Waters who named her world renowned restaurant, “Chez Panisse,” in Berkeley, California, after one of the central characters of Fanny. Fanny takes us to a place in time where relationships between friends and family shared common threads that formed tight knit communities that sailed leisurely through life’s joys and travails. Fanny, translated from its original French and directed by Roland David Valayre, features Alan Badger, Fabien Ferhani, Benoit Monin, Nicolas Poler, Andrea Satin, Karen Sellinger, Puneet, R. David Valayre, Ket Watters and Genevieve Wilton. Experience Fanny at the Southside Theater, Fort Mason Center, Bldg. D, San Francisco from April 16 through 26.
