“A community food forest will bring life, nourishment, new memories and a positive focus to a piece of property that otherwise evokes so much pain.” - Tina Harden Co-founder BFFTNEF

ORANGE PARK, Fla. - March 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Orange Park, FL, 03/15/15  – 1152 Gano Avenue in Orange Park, Florida will no longer be an empty lot, void of life and only remembered for the tragedy that unfolded there. It will be just the opposite, a living memorial that teems with a variety of literal and figurative nourishment, all thanks to the forward thinking Somer Thompson Foundation partnering with a local grass roots group, Bring Food Forests To Northeast Florida (BFFTNEF) who are dedicated to bringing Food Forests to public lands and supporting local homeschooling students with educational & volunteer opportunities,

A beautiful, self sustaining, organic food forest will bring about life, renewal and purpose; while it serves as a memorial to a very special little girl taken from our world far too soon.  Food forests promote permaculture principles and are characterized as a low-maintenance sustainable plant-based food production and agroforestry system based on woodland ecosystems, incorporating fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables (which have yields directly useful to local communities.)  Making use of companion planting, these can be intermixed to grow in a succession of layers; to build a woodland habitats.

“A few public food forests have been created in the United States but many more are right around the corner. Diena Thompson, her foundation and The Town of Orange Park, Florida, should be commended for their support of such a  forward thinking and far reaching project. There isn't any doubt in my mind that Somer's Garden will have a huge impact locally and beyond.” - Jolinda Kohl Co-founder of BFFTNEF

Ground breaking on Somer's Garden is scheduled for the weekend of April 11th, 2015.  BFFTNEF will handle the design, management and installation of this project, and is actively seeking volunteers, sponsors and donations to bring this incredible plan to fruition.
