Army Veteran Throws Out First Pitch at National vs. Astros Game on March 13, 2015

VIERA/MELBOURNE, Fla. - March 13, 2015 - PRLog -- Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Jim Harnish took to the mound today at Space Coast Stadium to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Washington Nationals vs. Houston Astros game.  Mr. Harnish was joined by members of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Flight Team, who alongside their B-25 Bomber “Panchito” are in the Space Coast area this weekend sharing DAV’s message of support of local veterans at the TICO Warbird Airshow.

Jim Harnish started his military career with the Air Force in 1949 where he worked as an aircraft and engine mechanic as well as a Crew Chief for various types of aircraft.  Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force, Harnish joined the Army in 1957 where he served in the Intelligence Community until he retired in 1975 as a Counterintelligence Technician with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Harnish and his wife raised six children, three of whom he is proud to say followed in their father’s footsteps by serving in the armed forces.

Following his military career, Harnish served as a Service Officer for the DAV-Chapter 109 in Titusville, Florida for the past 20 years.  Jim found this volunteer position extremely rewarding as he was able to assist hundreds of veterans, widows and children of veterans to receive the benefits they’ve earned.

“It is a dream to stand on the mound of alongside Major League Baseball players.  Growing up, men like this were a young boy’s heroes.  As an adult I’ve discovered I have new heroes in life- the men and women of our armed forces who bravely sacrificed for our country.  They are out there fighting for our right to be here today enjoying America’s pastime.   All of those men and women gave some… and some gave all,” said Harnish.

Following the throw, Harnish joined the DAV Flight Team at the TICO Warbird airshow alongside B-25 “Panchito” in order to provide information about DAV programs/benefits and to remind people of the sacrifices veterans make for freedom.

The DAV Flight Team is an aviation outreach program on a nationwide airshow circuit in order to promote the services DAV can provide to injured veterans and their family members.
