Storytelling is a performing-art form that uses a variety of world myths, folktales and reflections on personal experiences to create a spoken-word experience. While the craft is often described as an "ancient art," contemporary storytelling entertains an audience while touching on universal themes. Storytelling is neither stand-up comedy nor scripted recitations, but rather a unique-to-the- "I'm glad we can connect our west-valley storytelling events with the arts council, they have this great space for intimate events like this," says Sean Buvala, one of the featured storytellers for the evening. Buvala is the executive director of Storyteller.net, one of the oldest Internet resources for oral storytelling. "The west valley has been our home for decades and we're doing contemporary storytelling (called "StoryRise") more often in great local spots." The evening features four storytellers. In addition to Buvala, featured tellers will be Mark Compton, Sandy Oglesby and Elly Reidy.
