UK Local Authorities have to regain their edge in designing sustainably mobility

March 3, 2015 - PRLog -- Local authority executives, consultants and researchers have extensively discussed successful approaches for developing and implementing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans, a concept promoted by the European Commission. The group discussion focused on successful cases such as Hamburg HafenCity (Germany), Malmö (SE) and Copenhagen (DK). Additionally, the seminar outlined the opportunities that exist to obtain supportive funding from the European schemes, relating to SUMP.

The discussion, pertinent to the UK context, agreed that the UK Local Authorities have lost their edge in terms of planning sustainably for mobility. However, not only are these principles sought for by local citizens, but also they are necessity to the modern and dynamic Local Government. The Authorities have to capitalize on the concept of “Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans”, which presents a long-term strategy for the future development of urban areas, specifically setting out technical, infrastructure, policy and soft measures to improve performances while at the same time enhancing sustainability.
