3/8: Cape Verdean Recognition Committee 6th Annual Gala Celebration

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - March 2, 2015 - PRLog -- SHAWNN MONTEIRO, A LOVE OF JAZZ, AND MORE AT CAPE VERDEAN FUNDRAISER

Legendary vocalist and Whaling City Sound recording artist headlines 6th annual event

A performance by legendary jazz singer Shawnn Monteiro will be the centerpiece of an event sponsored by the Cape Verdean Recognition Committee (http://cvrcinc.org/). The musical event, a fundraiser for scholarships and the group’s annual parade, is the committee’s 6thannual and will happen on March 8th from 3-7pm at Cotali Mar Restaurant, 1178 Acushnet Ave, New Bedford (http://www.cotalimarrestaurante.com/).

“I’m so happy to be part of such a great event,” says Monteiro.  Last summer, the singer headlined Your Theatre (http://yourtheatre.org/)’s New Bedford JazzFest (https://www.facebook.com/NewBedfordJazzFest), where she brought the audience of hundreds to their feet. Supporting Shawnn is longtime collaborator John Harrison III, with Bill Miele on bass and Chris Poudrier on drums. The trio, as well as Monteiro, records for New Bedford’s own iconic jazz label, Whaling City Sound. “I know this will be a blast, and for such an excellent cause!”

Monteiro is a musical treasure along the Southcoast. In addition to recording and gigging, Monteiro shares her love for jazz in general as an adjunct professor at Rhode Island College and the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford. Not only that, she deepens her commitment to the genre by giving master classes in jazz vocals all over the world —including in Italy, France, Croatia, Spain and more. She takes teaching as seriously as singing. She also performs several times a year in contintental Europe, with fans in Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

“Every time I go somewhere—it doesn’t matter where—I teach them about this thing we call jazz. It’s our American art form. I turn my students on to this music, and they say, ‘Oh my God! We’ve never heard this! And I tell them, ‘Unless you pass it on, it’s going to die.’”

Opening the afternoon gala will be another local artist, this one a much-loved duo: Barry and Judi DeRossi. Come one, come all to this great and worthwhile event!
