Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas Announces Short Story Contest
Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to secure loving and stable homes for dogs and cats at risk of being lost in the shelter system. Through a variety of programs such as Kendall's Kupboard, a pet food pantry, and Solutions over Surrenders which gives pet owners access to resources like training, financial assistance, and more, Hearts Alive aims to keep pets in their original homes whenever possible.
Stories should be between 2000 and 4000 words and should follow the prompt: Pets hold a special place in our hearts. They are our companions, our best friends, our children, even our therapists at times. Is there a wonderful animal who has touched your life?
Final day for submissions is April 17th and the winners will be announced mid-May. There is a $25 entry fee in the form of a donation to Hearts Alive Village. "Everyone has a story to tell about that special pet. This is a wonderful way for people to share their stories, and save lives," said Christy Stevens, President of Hearts Alive Village.
The top ten stories will be published in an anthology by Muddy Pig Press, founded in 2013 with the mission of providing an outlet for writers groups and other organizations to give their members a voice. "The “piglets” at the press are excited to team up with Hearts Alive Village in their effort to share tales of tails!" said Richard Warren, Senior Editor. Their current titles include Tales from the Silver State I and II, Scammers, Schemers and Dreamers and Eighteenth Century Blogosphere.
The Writer's Block is a bookseller, book manufacturer, literary treasury, writers' workshop, and artificial bird sanctuary. Its Book Shop in Vegas is an exclusive retailer of new fiction and nonfiction books, writing and print supplies, games and Venus flytraps. Codex, a studio space located behind the store, is dedicated to education, production and publishing—and is where The Writer's Block offers free classes to Las Vegas students in creative writing and bookmaking. They will be hosting a reading and signing party for contributors to the anthology and providing the first place prize of a gift card to the store and an artificial bird adoption.
