JT Wimsatt Completes Work on LMU Life Sciences Building in Los Angeles

VALENCIA, Calif. - Feb. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- JT Wimsatt Contracting Co., Inc.- announces that it has completed the structural concrete portion of the Loyola Marymount Life Sciences Building, slated to open Fall 2015.  The $110 million building is the first portion of work to be completed for LMU’s new campus master plan.

"The greatest challenge on the LMU-Life Science Building is the design, coordination and construction of a very complex skin system," says Brian Rush, senior project manager with C.W. Driver, the Pasadena-based general contractor in charge of construction states in an ENR California Article. "The skin is made up of SwissPearl [cement panels], metal panels, unitized glazing, stick-framed glazing, point-supported structural glass walls and a green roof system."

         The four story Cast-In-Place structure includes 3 levels of subterranean parking, 24 teaching and research laboratories, 50 faculty offices, classrooms, 7,300 square feet of lab support space and a 292 seat auditorium.  The structural concrete portion of the LMU project includes exposed architectural elements and the 103,500 square foot building is seeking LEED Silver certification.  LMU Life Sciences Building has capitalized on established and new sustainable technologies, such as green roofs and drought-tolerant vegetation that will be used as teaching tools in biology coursework; storm water retention planters that natural science students will monitor for pollutants; photovoltaic energy coursework; and water recycling measures that will be studied by both biology and natural science.   Officials say that 30% of the building’s energy will come from renewable sources.
