By: Emterra Group - Emterra Environmental Throughout the two week event commencing mid-February 2015, sponsorship from Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) has facilitated the placement of 550 recycling bins and carts throughout the city and the sports venues. Emterra will collect and manage the recyclables generated for the duration of the games. With 10 waste management facilities in BC, Emterra has the operations, expertise and manpower to handle the needs of such a large scale event. Emterra Environmental is an existing community partner, handling curbside recycling services for Prince George under contract to MMBC. Curbside residential recycling program success has led to MMBC expanding Emterra’s recycling services engagement to include multi-unit apartments and condominiums across Prince George. By collecting more recyclables, more waste is being diverted from landfill thereby promoting environmental sustainability. “Multi-Material BC is pleased to be able to contribute to the 2015 Canada Winter Games and their environmental legacy,” says Allen Langdon, Managing Director of Multi-Material BC. “Through this contribution we are not only assisting the 2015 Games in maintaining its sustainability objectives, but we are also able to expand opportunities for Prince George residents to recycle more materials, an essential step to help us increase the amount of packaging and printed paper that is diverted from landfills.” Prince George Mayor, Lyn Hall, added, “As a community, having these bins in place during the 2015 Games will dramatically decrease the volume of waste going into our landfills. However, the true impacts will be experienced long term as multi-family dwellings will soon have access to the same curbside recycling program as single family homes.” “Emterra is looking forward to participating in the success of the 2015 Canada Winter Games by ensuring the recycling process runs smoothly and as much materials are diverted from landfill. We’re equally excited that we’ll be able to reuse the collection bins by rolling out recycling to residents in multi-family homes,” said Ed Walsh, Emterra’s VP of Operations in BC.
