At the very least, when you hand someone a book you wrote, it’s more impressive than handing a business card."  Having something more impressive than a business card is only one of many benefits of having your own book.  As James said, it can make you an expert in your industry.  The research that you need to do in order to write your book will allow you to learn more about your field as well as share that information to others.  It can also help clarify and organize your thoughts, spread your message even while you’re sleeping, give you something to be proud of, create an extra stream of income, give you some bragging rights, and increase visibility and exposure for you and your business.

While there may be some benefits to traditional publishers, the benefits of self-publishing can outweigh those of publishing through a publishing house.  It may take several years to get published through a publisher while self-publishing can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time - months, weeks, and possibly even days.  The expenses of self-publishing can also be significantly less while retaining publishing rights and getting higher royalty percentages.  In fact, Mitchell Kaplan, president of Books & Books and co-founder of Miami Book Fair International says, “My point is that people might not kill themselves to get published today.  They would go self-publishing.”  This was in reference to John Kennedy Toole who reportedly killed himself in part due to frustration over unsuccessful attempts to get his book about New Orleans published.  After his death, his mother was able to get his book published in 1980.  The following year it won a Pulitzer prize for fiction and has gone on to sell over 1.5 million copies in over 18 languages.  Today’s self-publishing options could well have alleviated many of John’s frustrations.

While self-publishing may not be for everyone, today’s technology makes this a viable option for many want-to-be authors.  It allows the normal person to share their story in print or ebook format to hundreds and thousands of people with little cost.  These benefits and how to self-publish your own book will be discussed at the Entrepreneur Success Network event.
