2015 Electrical Safety Workshop Wraps Up

By: IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop

Feb. 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Louisville, KY – As the exhausted attendees prepared to leave bourbon country, they stopped by to congratulate Hugh Hoagland, Chairman of the 2015 Electrical Safety Workshop. “I know you’ve heard this a lot, but great event – this was the best ESW yet.” Hugh accepted the congratulations, saying, “Glad you enjoyed it, we had a fantastic group of volunteers that made this all possible.”

For the past 23 years, the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW) has served as the platform for technical papers and research that drive worldwide electrical safety standards. The annual event is produced by the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Committee. Prior to the workshop, many attendees participated in the of development such standards as the ANSI/IEEE 1584 Guide for Performing Arc Flash Calculations, and/or two emerging IEEE standards for safe equipment design and circuit breaker design.

First-time attendees were amazed by the quality of the presenters. Committee members from NFPA 70E, and CSA Z462 were featured again and again delivering technical papers, tutorials and Focus Sessions. David Wallis, former Director of Engineering with OSHA – the man who literally wrote the book on OSHA’s electrical standards – wowed attendees with his Keynote.

ESW by the numbers:

·   98% of Attendees would recommend ESW to a colleague

·   517 Attendees from 18 different countries

·   22 Technical Presentations, 5 case studies, 6 tutorials and 19 Focus Presentations

·   3-Hour Expo featuring 59 leading manufacturers and service providers

·   4 Hospitality Suites, 3 Networking Receptions

·   3 Standards development meetings

·   Too many karaoke singers to count

It’s been said that, “If you want to see what electrical safety will look like in three-to-five years, go the ESW this year.” The ESW has long been the venue where papers and research are unveiled that ultimately shape the world’s electrical standards. “We have been fortunate to have attracted a consistently high quality of presenters and papers over the years,” explains Ken White, ESW Technical Program Chair. “Many of our presenters are the men and women who are either writing the standards, or conducting the research driving those standards.” The diversity and quality of papers is a credit to the workshop and one of the reasons it is so successful.

The ESW is welcoming proposals for papers for next year’s event which takes place in Jacksonville, Florida, USA, March 7-11, 2016. Help the ESW to “change the culture of electrical safety.” The call for papers is open through April 1, 2015. Visit http://ewh.ieee.org/cmte/ias-esw/ for more information.
