Silly Things People Do at Trade Shows

Feb. 11, 2015 - PRLog -- You've been to your fair share of trade shows, so you probably have a pretty good idea as to what to expect from each one and what you need to do to be successful. Still, there are all kinds of silly mistakes that even trade show "professionals" tend to make. By avoiding these silly yet common mistakes, you can better position yourself for success at your next show.

Relying Solely on Memory
How many conversations would you say you strike up during your average trade show? A dozen? 50? 100? Either way, if you're the type who tends to rely on memory as a means of recalling all of those conversations for later follow-up, you're crazy; it's time to invest in a nice note pad or even a tablet that you can use to take notes of your conversations either during or after you have them.

Furthermore, make sure you have plenty of business cards to hand out for easy follow-up (and that you have a safe, organized place to store business cards you receive from others).

Not Planning Ahead
Most trade shows will allow people to come in a few hours early to begin setting up their displays; if you're not taking advantage of this, then you could be wasting your company's time. If attendees see that you're still setting up once the trade show begins, they're likely going to think of your company is a negative light because they'll stereotype you as a poor planner.

Instead, take advantage of the time you get to show up early. If you finish setting up with some time to spare, this can make for a great opportunity to begin striking up conversations with other attendees before the show begins.

Not Bringing Anybody from Management
When you run a trade show display with nobody from senior management, people are more likely to think that your company's upper management doesn't take the trade show seriously. At the same time, you don't want to bring along all of upper management; that'd be overkill (and probably not very pleasant for you, right?).

Find a happy medium; bring along one or two members from management to man the display, give a presentation, or simply walk around and network with customers and possible business partners. This will show others at the trade show that your company takes the trade show seriously.

By avoiding these all-too-common mistakes, you'll be well on your way to a more successful trade show presence in no time.
