By: Rayeesa's Indian Kitchen Young Herefordshire Apprentice shortlisted for Prestigious Business Awards When 18-year-old Farah Asghar-Sandys from Mordiford Herefordshire took a gap year from her studies last year, she said to herself “ I want to help build a business in my gap year”, and that is exactly what she did. Farah has been selected as a finalist in this year's Midlands Business Awards 2015. The Midlands Business Awards celebrates the finest business talent the Midlands have to offer. From manufacturers, clubs and service providers to universities and young entrepreneurs, and recognizes the best business minds in 11 different categories. Farah had successfully completed her IB studies at Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire, and was looking for something to occupy her time before University. Her mother Rayeesa who runs an Indian Cookery School in Herefordshire, had recently launched her own range of Indian cooking sauces, and was looking for an apprentice, and jokingly asked her if she would like to be her apprentice. Farah said ‘Yes’. This started a whole new and exciting journey as mother and daughter team took their new product to market. Farah took the role of sales and marketing manager. Her role included branding the sauces, booking food shows and then even learning how to cook the sauces herself as well as driving all over the country to sell them to independent farm shops, butchers and delis who were interested. Her hard work and determination helped to increase from a dozen local stockists to over 40 Nationally. “It wasn’t long before I realized that Farah had a natural flair for business” says Rayeesa “ Particularly in sales. I had to send her to pitch to new motorway service station in Gloucester when I couldn’t make it, she did such a great job we got the contract.” Farah has been nominated for Young Entrepreneur of The Year award because of all the hard work she has put in to building the business in 2014. “ I know we wouldn’t be where we are now, without Farah’s dedication and hard work, it has helped me see so much more potential for future growth, and I believe she is a born business woman. ” Farah now 19, is currently studying Law at Durham University, but is planning on returning to the now family business. The Midlands Business Awards Gala dinner will be held on 20th Feb at Birmingham Metropole, where the winners will be announced. Farah is also the youngest finalist among some very established names.
