because it has zero impact on the joints and as we age most adults will be prone to joint damage, at the knees or hips. From my experience teaching, most people that took classes at their local Y orare self taught they are missing so much technique. Learning proper stroke mechanics and breathing correctly  will truly turn this activity into a wonderful work-out. It is excellent to have a medly of different work-out routines and adding swiming to your repetoire . If you are going to do lap swimming it is vey important to have the correct form, otherwise you can pinch your neck and shoulders while attempting to do the freestyle. If your objective is to swim laps you must learn the proper starts and turns at each end of the pool because if you stop it does not count toward your goal, which could be to swim for 20 minutes or to do 20 consecutive laps.

Doctors reccommend that a 20 minute cardio work out at least 2-3 times a week is heart healthy. Anything beyond 20 minutes will start to increase your metabolisim. It may not sound like alot of time but swimming for 20 minutes can be a hugh work-out. Swimming may be the perfecet sport for you if you want to lower your blood pressure. The breastroke another popular stroke we teach should never be done by someone with lower back problems in the lumbar region. It is important to learn more than one stroke. There is the freestyle, breasstroke, elementary back stroke back, sidestroke ,and butterfly. The butterfly is a stroke that could pull out your muscles if done incorrectly and it is also a stroke that we only teach by special request. All of the classes teach the basics of water safety which include treading water, floating on the  back and our drown proofing method that will keep you safe in deep water for a long period of time. Swimming in a pool is different than swimming in an open body of water such as a lake or ocean. If you choose to go sailing or kayaking you must always wear a safety vest even if you are a competent swimmer. Boating accidents can occur and you may get hit in the head by something so never think that you are a strong enough swimmer to not take the precautiuon and wear a life vest.
