Stepinac Will Be First High School in Nation to Stage Elton John's Tony Award-Winning "Billy Elliot"

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Feb. 2, 2015 - PRLog -- )   Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains will be the first high school in the U.S. to stage Elton John’s Tony award-winning “Billy Elliot” during five performances in early May.

Stepinac’s acclaimed Drama Club will perform the musical about a boy in a rough mining town in England who would rather dance than fight on the stage of the school’s Major Bowes Theater at 7:30 PM on May 1, 2, 8, 9 and at 2 PM, Sunday, May 10.

Last year, Stepinac’s Drama Club was one of only a few schools in the U.S. that were licensed to perform Disney’s “Mary Poppins” which garnered top Metro Awards, the highest honors that high school production groups can win in the New York region.

Since 1949, the school’s Drama Club has won critical acclaim for its productions of fall dramas and spring musicals. It has also won the international recognition of performing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The productions have nurtured the talents of many young students at Stepinac. Some went on to greater fame including Academy Award winner Jon Voight and Emmy-Award winner Alan Alda.

The Stepinac Drama Club is headed by Frank Portanova, Vice Principal for Academics and Curriculum who serves as the show’s Director and Keith Sunderland who is the Producer.
