Crime Publisher Announces Anthology of Hot Car Deaths
Recently, notorious Serial Crime Expert RJ Parker, author of seventeen true crime books, and bestselling crime author JJ Slate announced the completion and pending publication of their anthology titled Backseat Tragedies: Hot Car Deaths. Available now to pre-order and set to hit the shelves April 14th in eBook, paperback, and audiobook (mid-May), the book depicts past tragedies and explains some of the research behind why experts think these accidents happen so frequently. This book also discusses new technologies coming to the market that will hopefully put an end to hot car deaths completely.
According to reports, while 30 hot car deaths were recorded in the U.S. last year, in 2013 there were 44 deaths in this manner and since 1998, 636 children have died after being trapped in an unattended hot vehicle. Slate recently stated, “RJ and I wrote this book to spread awareness about these tragedies and what we can do as a society to reduce, and eventually eliminate, hot car deaths. Most people think it can't happen to them, but the research shows that it happens to people of all ages, races, income, and education levels.”
In 2014, Justin Harris was charged with murder after allegedly leaving his toddler strapped in his car seat while he went to work on a hot July day, causing the child to die of hyperthermia. While this was one of the inspirations for writing the text, as the book description explains, accidents caused by neglect are possible when it comes to hot car deaths, but in some cases these crimes are intentional murder. In the end, as Slate recently said in regards to inspiration surrounding the book, “We hope to raise awareness about how a simple act of carelessness can result in the death of a beautiful child.”
