Farmers Insurance by David Lorms Offers Black History Program To Local Schools

HOUSTON - Jan. 30, 2015 - PRLog -- David Lorms of Farmers Insurance has announced that Farmers Insurance Group, in partnership with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), will provide educators with a dynamic new program designed to bring Black history to life for local students.

Freedom’s Song: 100 years of African-American Struggle and Triumph features a documentary and accompanying lesson plans highlighting pivotal events in this country’s civil rights movement.

Freedom’s Song, which debuted in February 2006, has already met with great enthusiasm in the education community. The State of Maryland was so impressed by the program that they are incorporating the lesson plans into the curricula of every middle and high school in the state.

“Teaching children about the civil rights struggles from the 20^th Century is important to our community,” said Farmers agent David Lorms.

“Farmers understands the important link between public schools and democracy and became concerned when budgetary cuts were forcing public schools to eliminate U.S. civics classes. The fact that Farmers choose to do something about it—by creating this educational program—is a great example of corporate responsibility,” (name) said.

“We traveled the country to interview civil rights activists who are now in their 80s and 90s,” said Randy Rice, Executive Director of Farmers Education Programs and writer/director of the Freedom’s Song documentary. “The end product presents ten stories not usually found in the history books, that are crucial to understanding the struggle African-Americans went through during the last century.”

The lesson plans and videos are free to educators thanks to a grant from Farmers Insurance. “Creating and distributing educational programs has long been a priority for us at Farmers,” said Luisa Acosta-Franco, Director of Community Affairs & Sponsorship. “Freedom’s Song is the most ambitious program we’ve ever initiated.”
