Molly Weiss is Marilyn Monroe in Project X, a euphemism for what is commonly used at the end of a message to represent kisses, but which can also mean what is not yet known.  Project X is a compilation of personas; Weiss is the photographer, cinematographer, director and subject. “OY My Marilyn” contains both video and video stills.

Ever the Icon, Marilyn Monroe prevails as a sex symbol and classic pin-up for her work in Hollywood as an American actress, model, and singer, eventually self-made producer in the 1950s and 1960s.   Today, claims to fame are arguably more blurred and perhaps require a little less talent, with the rise of reality TV stars, the use of selfies in social media and vanity channels on YouTube, which give almost anyone the virtual power to become a “celebrity”, an industry America still knows well.   The discourse gives rise to the idea of image, begs feedback from women who cannot feel sexy and raises questions about the pressure society places on women to follow gender identity roles harking back in history.

For the over weight and underweight, for those who have suffered accidents, sexual abnormalities and genetic hormone imbalances resulting in lowered libido much like Weiss in this tell-all exhibit, the juxtaposition between the classic definition of femininity and feeling undesirable and even grotesque is confronted. What happens when sexiness, as it is popularly defined, collides with illness, personal problems, and ideas about self-esteem as it did for Marilyn?  Weiss dares us to explore in a layered exhibition consisting of photographs, prints, animation, video, performance and paintings, challenging contemporary views about judgment, sex and gender - PROJECT X.

This multi-media exhibit is a natural progression for Weiss, whose ancestry harkens back to D.A. Pennebaker -- a rock and roll documentarian -- and whose earliest memories of film and photo at Dugal in New York City included the development of photgraphs for Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon and Mary Ellen Mark.

PROJECT X opens Friday, February 13th 2015 at Gallery Sensei, 278 Grand Street, NYC (take the F to Delancey / B D to Grand / J  Z to Bowery).   A pre-valentines eve treat! Exhibition runs through to FEBRUARY 28th with a closing reception and artist talk.  Beverages on opening night generously provided by Massachusetts TAP THAT ale and microbrewery.  All press inquiries please contact ZEBRA Public Relations email :  info@zebra.nu
