BANGKOK - Jan. 29, 2015 - PRLog -- We all have a standard when it comes to cleanliness and basic hygiene. We all have a standard of what is acceptable cooking for healthy eating. Corporations even go as far as having a charter for their employees when it comes to lifting and operating machinery. Yet there has yet to be put in place as a standard for the very air we breathe! This is so much more prevalent in South East Asia where residents of this part of the world spend long hours in air conditioned environments.

I met up with two UK chaps in Bangkok who tell me stories from their countless years’ experience of working underneath and behind AC units that literally put me off my lunch!

Alan Boswell MD of Advanced Energy Savings Solutions told me:

“It’s very much a reactive market, people tend to phone up their local guy when their AC breaks down, who pops round and fixes the air con and his idea of giving the unit a clean is; to shake down the filters and spray on what they believe is a formula that cleans the coils in the AC unit, well it may look clean but what it’s really doing is corroding the coils and reducing the unit’s life drastically. A good AC unit is a major investment and should last about ten years in a normal environment, but we are seeing units corrode much faster than that.

AC units are not cheap, and we also deal with very large companies like Central Department stores and we are demonstrating how many millions of baht’s that we are saving them when we get the units and machinery operating efficiently.

Then these companies, when they are finished, throw the cleaning fluid down the drains” Alan looks at his business partner Andrew and they both wince, Andrew Ludlum, who is very much the hands on partner explained further;

“This formula most people use, is not supposed to be thrown down any domestic drain, it has devastating results on our environment and is also highly illegal, leading to massive fines and adverse publicity for Hotels and office buildings.”

But much more important than the savings and the environment is one’s basic right to good air to breathe. Sick Building syndrome is world widely recognised now, and research is conclusive as to how staff who work in office buildings, suffer adverse effects to poor Indoor air quality and how less productive and less happy they become. Hotels also have to really examine what air they are pumping out to their guests also.

Estate managers in our experience are not as qualified as we would like, many are unaware of some of the microbes that live in air conditioning units and the fatal reactions some bacteria, like Legionella can have if they are neglecting their AC maintenance.
