Follow on Google News | Chiropractors in Orem Discuss Neck Adjustments for Heart HealthIn this article Orem Chiropractor - R. Ned McArthur, D.C. discusses research showing that neck adjustments can have an indirect affect on cardiovascular health.
By: Orem Chiropractor - R. Ned McArthur, D.C. The research that I reference is titled, Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Responses to Specific Diversified Adjustments to Chiropractic Vertebral Subluxations of the Cervical and Thoracic Spine. In this study researchers sought to understand how the autonomic nervous system responds to the adjustment. Researchers used blood pressure and heart rate as means of measuring autonomic response. The autonomic nervous system is a part of our nervous system that regulates many of the automatic functions in our body. In this study the researchers used diversified chiropractic adjustments. It’s probably important to point out that diversified is a technique of performing adjustments. In chiropractic there are probably hundreds of techniques. If you ever been adjusted by a chiropractor with his or hands that produced a cavitation (the sound that is produced when a joint “pops” or “cracks”), then you’ve had a diversified adjustment or some kind of variation of it. In this study, some of the study participants received diversified cervical adjustments and some received diversified thoracic adjustments. What they found was that those who had received the diversified cervical adjustment had a significant drop in their diastolic blood pressure. In case you don’t know, when you see your blood pressure, you’ll see two numbers, written with one number over the other, like a fraction. For example, 120/80 is considered to be text book normal for healthy males. The top number, in this example 120, is called the systolic blood pressure. It’s the amount of pressure that is produced while the heart is contracting. The bottom number, in this example 80, is called the diastolic blood pressure. It’s the amount of pressure that is produced while the heart is filling with blood. So, imagine if you will, a heart. It fills with blood and then squeezes, sending that blood through out the body, then refills and continues this process for the rest of our lives. I’m sure you can see how less pressure is produced while it’s filling and more would be produced while it squeezing. Diastolic pressure is a primary indicator of cardiovascular health. Meaning if your diastolic pressure is higher you are at a much greater risk for many different cardiovascular disease processes. There are many other facets of this article we’ll address in later posts. Your take home point is cervical (neck) adjustments affect your nervous system and that affect may reduce your diastolic pressure which could contribute to a reduction in your risk for cardiovascular disease.
